Noémie Goudal’s practice, who graduated from the Royal College of Art (2010), is based on the construction of illusionistic installations, staged in the landscape and then transposed into films, photographs, and performances. Optical devices, such as anamorphosis, compose these sets for which she favors a form of craftsmanship and modest special effects. The artist’s perspective, influenced by the history of science and paleoclimatology, focuses on multiple angles of understanding and observing our natural environments. By dissecting layers and perspectives of an image, she questions our mental constructions of landscape. Through a perfect balance between realism and constructed fiction, her images sublimate the scientific substrate from which they never depart.
